Recall dialogues like “Mogambo Khush Hua” from Mr. India, jaa jeele apni zidnagi, jaa simran jaa from the legendary DDLJ. All these dialogues are uttered by the iconic Amrish puri. The films like Mr. India, Koyla, Diljale, Tridev, and Karan Arjun made you hate him. At the same time movies like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge, Kisna, Pardes, Virasat depicted him as a completely different human being. Whenever Indian cinema would recall the best ‘Bad Man’ of all time, Amrish Puri would top the list. We have seen all the shades of this legendary actor and I admit today he is my personal favorite. His get up in the movie Loha in 1987 was really horrifying and only the actor of his caliber could have dared to have such looks.
Amrish puri was born on June 22nd 1932 in the current time Jalandhar. He was among the other 3 brothers Madan Puri and Chaman Puri both of them were established actors of their time. He graduated from B.M. College Shimla. After his studies he decided to take up an acting career as his brothers use to do in Indian film industry and for this reason he moved to the city of Bombay. He failed the screen test and instead found a job with ESIC. Side by side he continued to perform in Prithvi Theatre which was the most prestigious theatre of that time. Gradually he was established as a well known stage actor and he got Sangeet Natak Akademi award in the year 1979 and after this his journey as a Bollywood actor started when he was 40 years old. The actor acted in Tamil, Telgu, Marathi, Kannada films other than Hindi films.
Amrish puri was best known for his voice and this quality made him stand out amongst other villains. He acted in more than 400 films. The most popular films are Meri Jung, Tridev, Mr. India and Karan Arjun in which he had grey shades. Though in later part of his life he did some remarkable work as supporting actor which include DDLJ, Ghatak, Virasat and Gadar. He also did international projects like Gandhi and Mola Ram. Steven Spielberg said that “Amrish Puri is the fines villain the world has ever produced”.
The actor has various awards in his kitty including 8 Filmfare awards and many more recognitions. Amrish puri passed away in the year 2005 due to cerebral hemorrhage in Mumbai at the age of 72. We would never be able to forget such a great actor who made us abuse him and hate him on screen and at the same time love and adore him off screen.
