Mehmood – The Magician

Recall the iconic Movie Kunwaara Baap acted and directed by Mehmood!!!!! which gave a strong message about polio Vaccination and the movie had most of the big faces of bollywood on the request of Mehmood for the social cause. One more character which any movie buff couldn’t forget in lifetime is the role of South Indian music teacher in yet another iconic Movie Padosan. This was the magic of actor, director, singer, producer Mehmood Ali who made the audience to role on the floor. So come let’s look into the life of this great artist. He worked in more than 300 to 400 films and his comic timings in all his films was excellent.

Mehmood was born into a family where his entire family was involved with the film industry. His father Mumtaz was stage actor cum dancer of 40s and 50s. His siblings also use to work in the movies and so it was but obvious that Mehmood would too follow their footsteps but he surpassed the fame of his family members jointly and took the name of Ali family to the new heights. Before working in the films he did jobs like driving, selling poultry and he also taught actress Meena Kumari to play Table Tennis. Later on when he got married then he seriously thought of acting and began to play petty roles in the films like CID and Pyaasa which eventually got unnoticed but got noted for his comedy.

Mehmood tasted success with Bhoot Bangla for which he was both actor and director with actresss Tanuja. The movie was a great success and it made Mehmood a star overnight. Since there was no looking back and he became to be recognized as a successor to comedian Johnny Walker. Movies like Padosan, Aankhen, Pyar Kiya Jaa, Bombay to Goa, set a new milestone to comedy and till the date are remembered for the comic timings of Mehmood. His last film as an actor was Andaaz Apna Apna. His dialogue delivery was so natural and catchy that you can’t leave yourself without laughing. He won Filmfare award for his films Atma, Varies, Vardaan, Dil Tera Deewana   and was nominated for many more films.

On 23 July 2004, Mehmood died in his sleep in USA, where he visited for heart treatment. Famous singer Lucky Ali is one of the sons of Mehmood. Whenever we speak of iconic comedy films then Padosan is the first one to come to our mind and all this is because of the magnificent actor Mehmood.
